UNDERGRADUATES / STUDENTS
UNDERGRADUATES
Ramboll Whitbybird provides work placements in the UK for engineering undergraduates in all the main engineering disciplines.
We also offer
sponsorship to a small number of exceptional students.
Work placements vary in duration from a few weeks to six months or more. Many undergraduates who come to us in the summer break return every year. Others join us for long periods in their gap year.
We aim to provide good overall knowledge
of the industry and we involve our
placement students in as many
aspects of our business as we can.
The office environment is very friendly and sociable. There are plenty of activities and sports events and in our London office we organize regular talks open to all staff. Students are also offered a walking tour round London led by a senior Director.
Accommodation may be arranged for undergraduates joining us for summer work placements in London.
Applications should reach us before the end of February each year.
SCHOOL STUDENTS
We also provide UK school students with the opportunity to gain valuable engineering-focused work experience.
Our work experience programme runs throughout the year and provides students with the chance to work as part of a team, introducing them to a variety of tasks including computer analysis, problem solving and site visits.
Most students come for two weeks but we can make arrangements for longer periods.
Susan's story ....
"I don't know how they do it, but the people here always seem to find the time to sit down and talk to you properly about what you're doing."
As one of our sponsored undergraduates, Susan, 20, has completed several summer placements with us. She feels that her hands-on experience contributed greatly to her degree course at Nottingham University.
"If they're going to the site, they'll take me round I've seen projects progress now from year to year. It makes your course come alive, knowing you're doing things that really matter."
Ciaran's story ....
"It seemed like engineers are the people who know how things work. And you can do good volunteer work with civil engineering before I came here, I saw that Ramboll Whitbybird is involved in a project to build a library in Africa and I thought, that's quite cool."
A summer placement with us helped
Cíaran, 20, make his final subject choice before going into the third year of an engineering degree at the University of Cambridge. He'd taken mechanical engineering and architecture courses as part of his education, but felt his work with us opened up wider horizons.

Leanne's story ....
"I settled in in a matter of hours and by afternoon was happily calculating floor space and how much reinforcement would be need for each area to prevent sagging."
Coming straight from school into a busy working environment can be nerve-wracking, but Leanne, 17, found a warm welcome at whitbybird. After a week's work experience at our London office, she was well and truly hooked on engineering.
Sanjeev's story ....
"It was very interesting and rewarding. I learned a lot of skills and really enjoyed working with my new colleagues. Thanks to everyone who worked with me and helped me."
Sanjeev, 16, came from his upper school in Croydon to spend two weeks with members of our IT team. He was amazed at how much he learnt and how much fun it could be.
