Alan is founding director of whitbybird's Edinburgh office. He has previously been based in London and in Germany, where he worked for more than seven years.

His career encompasses several high profile national and international projects. These include sports stadia, mixed use developments and
high rise and long span construction that has involved structural innovation. He believes an effective structural solution is achieved through a comprehensive understanding of all project issues, including sustainability in construction and operation, transport and local impact,
and the long term benefits to a client's business.

Alan enjoys the challenge of co-ordinating large, multi-disciplinary project teams. His highly collaborative approach helps to eradicate duplication
and encourages the valuable exchange of ideas.

A frequent participant in seminars, workshops and open days for students of engineering and architecture, Alan also lectures for learned bodies and engineering institutions.
